Pete Alonso (Mets), the first and only 20-homer hitter in the major leagues this year, was mocked for his “cubicle”.
After hitting his 22nd home run of the season, Alonso mockingly shouted, “Throw me another one,” at the pitcher, only to have the game end in a walk-off loss. The opposing team responded with a “throw it again,” leaving Alonso shaking his head. 메이저사이트
Alonso hit a home run in the fourth inning of the 2023 Major League Baseball (MLB) game against the Atlanta Braves at Truist Park in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S., on July 7. With two outs in the top of the third inning and a 2-1 lead, Alonso took advantage of an errant slider from Atlanta pitcher Bryce Elder for a massive 448-foot (136.6 m) home run.
After rounding the bases, Alonso shouted “throw it again” and “throw it again, please” toward the Atlanta dugout. It was a taunt to give him another shot. It was caught on the replay.
Alonso’s home run gave the Mets a 4-1 lead. But in the sixth inning, the game was turned upside down.
Atlanta scored four runs in the sixth. Sean Murphy’s RBI double and Marcell Osuna’s tying RBI single tied the game at 4-4. With two outs, Orlando Arcia’s grounder to the second baseman turned into an infield single, scoring Osuna from third. Immediately after the reversal, Atlanta players shouted at first baseman Alonso. “Throw it again.”
The Mets gave up one more run in the eighth to fall back to 4-6. Aside from the home run, Alonso was held scoreless in the rest of his at-bats.
Elder’s mature response left Alonso shaking his head again. “Elder said after the game that he didn’t hear what Alonso said, but added that he would have acted similarly if he had hit the ball as far as Alonso did,” the New York Post reported.
Alonso’s taunt, Atlanta’s response, and the come-from-behind win set the tone for the National League East rivalry on day one of the series. The two teams will play again on Aug. 8 and 9. In the standings, the Mets are in third place, six and a half games behind division leader Atlanta. The Mets are also out of the top three in the National League wild card race.
