Ryu Hyun-jin (Toronto Blue Jays-photo) has been delayed in his return.
According to Sportsnet, Toronto manager 먹튀검증 John Schneider said on Friday that Ryu “will likely not start this week’s game against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim” and will “throw a simulated game” ahead of a series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. While Ryu is expected to pitch out of the bullpen and start against the Angels on April 29, Schneider wants to be cautious.
Ryu has been rehabbing for about 13 months after undergoing Tommy John surgery last year to repair ligaments in his elbow. On April 22, he earned a passing grade after throwing six innings against the New York Mets’ Triple-A affiliate, allowing two runs on three hits (two homers). He struck out five. Schneider decided that a simulated game against teammates would be more effective than a minor league rehab start to get a feel for the game.
There was speculation that Ryu would face Shohei Ohtani of the Angels in a Korean-Japanese pitcher’s duel on Sept. 29, but local media reported that the Angels delayed Ryu’s return to the mound because it would be too much for him to handle in his first game back. The MLB trade deadline is the first of next month. Ryu is expected to be added to the 40-man roster after that date.
Meanwhile, Toronto is on a roll. The Jays open a three-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers on July 25-27. They’ll have the 28th off, but from the 29th to August 14, they’ll play 17 straight games without missing a day. They face the Los Angeles Angels from July 29-31, the Baltimore Orioles from August 1-4, the Boston Red Sox from August 5-7, the Cleveland Cavaliers from August 8-11, and the Chicago Cubs from August 12-14.
